Our free week-long Summer Debate Institute

For the past 12 years, LAMDL has provided thousands of debaters with local summer debate events rooted in access for all students. We offer our camp exclusively to debaters in our program in order to make what is usually an expensive endeavor available in their community.

This summer, we proudly continued this tradition online! Due to the ongoing pandemic, we were not be able to host our traditional in-person camp at USC, but in collaboration with the Bay Area Urban Debate League (BAUDL) and the Silicon Valley Urban Debate League (SVUDL) we hosted the first ever West Coast Champs Debate Institute (WCCDI)!

The WCCDI was our first ever online Summer Debate Camp, but it was an incredible success. Seminars, lectures, and labs were combined between our leagues giving students the opportunity to work with and compete against experts and peers from all over California. The WCCDI served over 150 students with over 90 coming from Los Angeles. While the transition to online learning has come with its share of difficulties, our teams continue to recruit new novices, even from a distance. Our camp and season undeniably prove something very important: students are resilient, engaged, and motivated; we just need to keep doing the work to support them.
