2016 Tournament 1 at Downtown Magnets HS

On October 7th and 8th, LAMDL started the 2016-2017 debate season at Downtown Magnets High School. Over 200 students debated pivotal issues surrounding US foreign policy with China.

LAMDL Excels at 2016 National Championship at San Francisco

On April 15th through 17th, LAMDL students from Downtown Magnet High School (Samantha Lemus & Eleanor Skladman) and Stern MASS High School (Diana Alvarez & Samantha Velasco) traveled to San Francisco to compete against the best urban debate teams in the county at the 2016 Urban Debate National Championship.

LAMDL made history by having two teams finish in the top 4 at the national tournament. Downtown Magnet, who sat at 16th seed overall, reached the final round of the tournament losing a very close debate to University Prep from Detroit. Stern MASS, who sat at 5th seed overall, reached the semi-final round and lost a close debate to the league’s very own Downtown Magnet. Eleanor Skladman was honored 14th speaker and Diana Alvarez was honored was 5th speaker.

We are very proud of both teams for their hard work, passion, and successes last weekend. All four debaters are truly representative of what LAMDL stands for.

On March 11th and 12th, LAMDL hosted its NAUDL national qualifier and tournament 6 on the campus of CSU Los Angeles.

LAMDL 2015 Season Opener at USC

On October 9th and 10th, LAMDL kicked off the 2015-2016 debate season at USC, with the largest number of participants the league had ever hosted at a single tournament. Over 260 students across 17 schools competed on the campus of USC, debating about domestic surveillance policies.

Congratulations to Stern MASS’s Diana Alvarez and Samantha Velasco for placing first in Varsity, Downtown Magnet’s Kate Alejo and Christopher Perez for placing first in Junior Varsity, and Bravo Medical Magnet’s Ricardo De La Torre and Karla Cruz for placing first in Novice. All the debaters claimed an undefeated preliminary record.

Additionally, congratulations to the top 5 speakers in each division. The differences between these speakers are only about a tenth of a speaker point, so the competition for first was very close! These speakers included:
